Mahjong is a tile-based strategy game that combines skill, pattern recognition, and a little bit of luck.
Players take turns drawing and discarding tiles as they work to complete specific combinations and build a winning hand.
Although the rules may seem unfamiliar at first, beginners are often surprised by how quickly they begin recognizing patterns, building confidence, and enjoying the game.
Discover why Mahjong has become one of the world's most beloved games and why so many people are falling in love with learning it.
Whether you're completely new to Mahjong or simply curious about joining a class, you're in the right place.
A Game Rich in History
Mahjong originated in China over a century ago and has since become one of the world's most popular strategy games. Today, millions of people enjoy Mahjong not only for the challenge of the game but also for the friendships, traditions, and community it creates.
While there are several versions played around the world, Hapa Mahjong offers a fun and welcoming way to connect with all mahjong players.
Meet Abi
Aloha, I’m Abi Donovan, founder of Hapa Mahjong. This journey began when visiting my American Mahjong-obsessed friends in Florida. I was curious to see what the hype was all about but it all seemed a bit much. The tiles, the card, the rules…so many rules! They agreed to give me a casual lesson over lunch. I fell in love with the game instantly: the click of the tiles, the strategy, the conversation and connection.
At home in Hawaiʻi, I was eager to keep playing. While the mainland has been overtaken by mahjong clubs and events, I couldn't find a community or anyone to play with locally. I knew I couldn't be the only one searching for a game.
That is why I started Hapa Mahjong. I wanted to build the community I was looking for and create space for players of all backgrounds. In Hawaiian, hapa means part, or portion; in the islands it has come to describe people of mixed heritage, and it is said with affection. Mahjong is a hapa game: born in China, reshaped in Japan, reinvented again in America, and here those tables have been set side by side for generations.
We host fun, elevated events that blend the rich tradition of the game with a stylish, lively atmosphere. Whether you are a seasoned player looking for a competitive table, a complete beginner eager to learn your first hand, or you’re just looking to have a good time with lovely people, you have a seat at our table.
Let's play, talk story, and build Hawaiʻi's mahjong community together!
